Featuring Terry Oparka, writing as Tara Eldana, author

I am a recently retired, multi-award-winning staff writer for a weekly community newspaper chain in metro Detroit. I became hooked on romance fiction when my 11th-grade English teacher rejected the book report I wrote, saying the book was much too easy for me, and insisted I read and report on Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca.

After some life-changing health issues, and covering over a dozen murder and criminal trials, I decided to write the kind of stories I like to read, stories with happy endings.

I love the romance genre and love letting my characters take control of their stories. I am a member of Greater Detroit Romance Writers and write under the pen name of Tara Eldana.

What genres do you like to read? – romance, memoir, women’s fiction, and autobiographies.

Do you have a favorite book or movie? – Current book favorites are the Outlander series. For movies, I rewatch League of Their Own, Moonstruck, It Happened One Night, and Casablanca every chance I get. My (sort of current movie) favorite is Elvis.

Which is your favorite mode of writing? Why? – I love to write on legal pads in large letters, and then I type up the good parts. I learned that method from Heather Sellers at a writing retreat held at Oakland University years ago. I got my newspaper publisher to pay for the retreat, although I could never report news stories that way. The theory is you don’t type up the bad stuff.

What is your primary or favorite genre to write? – erotic romance and paranormal romance.

Do you have other genres you write for? – I just finished a YA that’s up on Kindle Vella under my actual name.

Which project is your favorite so far? Why? – My latest that I wrote for the Cocky Hero Club series, Hotshot Mogul. It’s about second-generation characters from one of the core novels and it’s paranormal. I don’t have a release date, yet.

How long have you been writing? What does your path look like? – I have been writing fiction for 40 years. I was a newspaper staff writer for 20 years. I’d like to see what I can do with the YA paranormal and do some more paranormal romance.

Where is your favorite place to write? What kind of atmosphere do you need? Quiet, music, coffee, wine? Any tricks to get in the zone? – My office/library/study, after coffee, sometimes with wine. I love to edit while listening to my playlist. I like to create in quiet.

What do you do for fun when you’re not writing? – I read, cook and bake, play mahjong, Wordle, and use a free app to learn French.
