Maris Soule is a California girl who was told, by her new husband, when he suggested they move to Michigan, “We’ll only stay there 2 years.” Ha! They’ve lived in Michigan almost 50 years. She quit teaching high school art to have 2 children, started writing in 1980, and has had 25 romances and 5 mysteries, plus 2 short stories published, many winning awards, including twice being a RITA finalist.
What is your primary or favorite genre to write? – Mystery
Do you have other genres you write for? – Romantic Suspense
Which project is your favorite so far? Why? – A Killer Past because my MC is 74, but she’s still a strong woman with a past that has given her skills most women (or men) do not possess.
How long have you been writing? – Almost 40 years
Where is your favorite place to write? What kind of atmosphere do you need? Quiet, music, coffee, wine? Any tricks to get in the zone? – I will and have written just about anywhere, but I prefer a quiet spot and no interruptions. A glass of wine beside the computer is always welcome. If I’m left alone, that is, husband doesn’t say, “I’m not interrupting, am I?” the story itself will get me into the zone.
What genres do you prefer to read? – I’m eclectic in my reading, but I prefer stories that have enough tension to make me want to keep reading, even when I know I should go to bed.
What’s your favorite book or movie? – My favorite is and probably always will be The Black Stallion. And yes, I love horses.
What do you do for fun when you’re not writing? –In the summer, I love being on the boat. In the winter I paint.
